ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH BELLEVILLE
A safety condition had arisen on the spire of this church - it was shedding its slate tiles in 2014 and had to be cordoned off with safety fencing until the problem could be addressed.
A skyjack was first brought in to assess if there was anything unusual other than loose tiles. At that time, we found extensive brick damage and lots of rotting and sealed louvres. We also discovered a significant stagnant air problem and lack of ventilation within the tower and spire. This was creating moisture and thereby softening the lumber that the slate was nailed to, creating an unstable situation.
The congregation decided to proceed with an entire overhaul of their spire and brick repairs to the tower. As well we added ventilation in the form of breathable louvres, which had not existed before.
The louvres on the spire were beyond saving, so custom duplicates were created and installed. More than 800 square feet of brickwork was addressed.
The weather vane that had been in the cellar since the 1960’s was taken to a machinist, where it was fully rebuilt. It weighs approximately 200 pounds and stands about 10’ in height, and this was a significant cost to the project: between the restoration and the installation, a cost of $10,000. The congregation was proud and delighted to have the weather vane re-installed to it’s rightful place at the top of the spire after 50+ years.
This was a huge restoration project - like Belleville had not seen in years. It was featured in the local newspaper a number of times and brought a great deal of satisfaction to all who were involved.
